Shankhpushpi is a plant native to India. It is scientifically called Convolvulus pluricaulis. Shankhpushpi is used for its action on the central nervous system, especially for boosting memory and improving intellect. Quantum of information gained from Ayurvedic and other Sanskrit literature revealed the existence of four different plant species under the name of Shankhpushpi, which is used in various Ayurvedic prescriptions described in ancient texts, singly or in combination with other herbs.
- The enolic extract and compounds like tannins, saponins, coumarin, flavonoids, phenol, and triterpenoids that are present in Shankpushpi contribute to its activity against various bacteria.
- Shankhpushpi has nootropic activity i.e., it can boost memory, learning capacity, and concentration in the person consuming it. Thus, it can be used to improve memory or in conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is usually seen in children, wherein the child has trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or is overly active.
- Shankhpushpi shows anxiolytic activity i.e., it can induce a feeling of peace and calm, reduce stress and mental tiredness, and improve sleep.
- Its antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory activity have been shown to improve brain functions like learning, thinking, reasoning, remembering, problem-solving, decision making, and attention.
